The mission of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Scout Law.
The BSA will prepare every eligible youth in America to become a responsible, participating citizen and leader who is guided by the Scout Oath and Law.
On my honor I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law; to help other people at all times; to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight.
A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent.
As an American, I will do my best to –
Be clean in my outdoor manners.
Be careful with fire.
Be considerate in the outdoors.
Be conservation minded.
Be Prepared
Do a Good Turn Daily
Troop 236 B was chartered in 1965. Troop 236 G was chartered in 2023. Our units are currently participating in a combined unit pilot, so we are operating as a combined unit until further notice. Our Charter Organization is Trinity Presbyterian Church in Raleigh, NC. We are part of the North Star District in the Occoneechee Council.
See Join Now for information on joining.
Scouts meet weekly for 90 minutes. We meet Mondays from 7-8:30pm at Trinity Presbyterian Church.
3120 N New Hope Rd
Raleigh, NC 27604
Although parents are not required to attend meetings with their scouts, parents should not leave until after the scouts dismiss to patrols and should be present at 8:15 for pickup and announcements.
A weekend camping trip or other outing is scheduled for the second weekend of each month for both units. See more information about camping
During the summer, the troops attend a week-long summer camp, typically the week of July 4th. Camp fees are normally around $400 per scout. Scouts usually commit to attend in Jan/Feb and can make payments until a final payment, typically around the beginning of May. Medical forms (parts A, B, and C) are required for all scouts and leaders that attend summer camp.
Community service is an important part of scouting. Our unit regularly takes part in service events and most ranks have a service requirement, including the Eagle rank which requires the scout to organize a significant service project.
Service events may include
Grounds cleanup at our charter organization, local parks and greenways, roads and riverways
Small construction projects contributing to the community or community organizations
Food and supply collections to benefit local food banks, our charter organization's food pantry, backpack buddy programs, local shelters, and more
Military service members, first responders, and veterans events
Other local, state, national, and international service opportunities where available
As Scouts BSA targets youth from rising-sixth grade until 18 years old, there is a focus on growing leadership, along with health and citizenship skills. With direction and guidance from leadership, the scouts are empowered to plan meetings and outings, working together to build their own programs. Adult leadership includes scoutmaster and assistant scoutmaster who directly interact with scout leadership (patrol leader council), as well as the troop committee who ensure the troop functions well. See more information about leadership and becoming an adult volunteer at Leaders.
Yes! Our unit is currently participating in a combined troop pilot with one unit supporting both boys and girls. Youth from 11-17 may join -- also 10 year olds in March of their 5th grade year or at age 10.5. Scouts are separated into boys and girls patrols.
Initial registration requires national and local council fees, currently $165. Dues are currently $400 a year and cover most monthly outing costs, badges, other materials. Full uniform costs around $150. Summer camp programs are usually around $400-500. Our unit fundraises usually once a year with a BBQ plate sale. Scholarships and other financial assistance are available. Do not let finances be a barrier to joining scouting. See Costs for more information.
If you are looking to purchase a uniform or other scout supplies not provided by the unit, most items can be purchased locally at the Occoneechee Council Scout Shop (off Atlantic Avenue, in Raleigh) or online at National Scout Shop.
The troop including scouts, leaders, and other adults use Discord and Scoutbook.
Discord is a private group messaging platform used by our unit. You can download the Discord App from phone's app store. It can also be used from a web browser.
Scoutbook is an online tool for unit management that is used to send emails.
Note that If the scouts need to communicate with an adult leader, they must include a parent or another adult leader on the communication (e.g., cc on email).
See Parent Resources for more detailed information on meetings, costs, scout expectations, and other details.
